THE OSCARS

                                                            The Oscars

Well... The party is over, the golden knights went home with their new masters, the curtains fell and the sets are already resting, preparing for next year...
But, two things are a kind of hard to understand. Why most of the Academy Awards Winners are dramas? And, why producers of the show think that a “wise” guy walking through the set, wearing underwear, is something funny?
If someone will walk naked on stage, what is the need for a red carpet... Shouldn’t it be wiser to show a little more dignity on a show that represents such a big industry?
And, what is the need of unnecessary political verbosity?
Way do we go to a movie theater? One would say, to watch a good movie, or, to have fun... But, does anyone have fun crying? Isn’t it tearjerking a manipulative act or false-emotion put on in order to achieve the desired reaction from others, usually sympathy?
If you come to think of it, a John Williams musical score, a few tears coming from some sad faces crying on a silver screen and, bingo! You’re in the mood for e few of your own tears you keep trying to hold.
Wouldn’t it be better to have some belly laughs like if you were watching “Victor/Victoria” for the first time, or “Blind Date”, or “My Cousin Vinny”, or “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, or “A Guy Thing”?
Like one of the winners said in her speech; no actor is better than other...
Of course, an “Oscar” is a big buster for the box office, on the other hand, I bet, in a few months, all winners will be for ever forgotten. Let’s see! Which was the best movie or actor, or actress of two years ago?... Don’t feel bad! I don’t remember it either...
Now! Who will ever forget “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers”, or The Nutty Professor (with Jerry Lewis, of course), or Sabrina (the remake), or “Enter the Dragon”, or “Jaws”, “Mash”, “Picnic”, “Citizen Kane”, “To kill a Mockingbird”, Psycho”, “Rear Window”, “North by Northwest”?... None of these movies were the best of their year, maybe because they were made to last and entertain us forever, not only to steal some bucks out of your pocket and leave you with a bad taste at the and, on your way home...
Actors like Richard Gere, John Cusack, Meg Ryan, Donald Sutherland, Marilyn Monroe, Errol Flynn, Jerry Lewis, Charlie Chaplin, Bruce Willis, Tyrone Power, Steve Martin, were never even nominated for the statue. Maybe because they are bad actors? Or worse than all the others?
What about directors like Blake Edwards, Francois Truffaut, Stanley Donen, Alfred Hitchcock, Sydney Pollack, Howard Hawks, Frederico Fellini, who never won anything... Bad people, huh?
To nominate “Crash”, or “Around the World in 80 Days”, or “Chariots of Fire”, as best pictures of their years is, at best, an insult to our intelligence as moviegoers. That is just to nominate e few of the hundreds of Hollywood blunders... Politics, politics, politics...
For me, movies are a form of escapism, to get rid of problems, to make me feel better, to relax, at least for a few minutes... Trouble, come to people all the time, you don’t have to look for them, or pay to watch other people suffering. The problem is that some Hollywood pseudo intellectuals think that a comedy, or a romance, or a chick-flick are something minor, not worth seeing and, this same people call their own bad taste as a form of art.
Now! When a movie, or an actor, or actress is nominated “best”, is that according to whom? I never authorized anybody to talk, or vote, on my behalf, did you?
Should “stars” turn the stage into a soapbox, advocating on issues ranging from NSA surveillance to equal pay, the voting rights act, equality for women, to immigration reform? Do they show movies at the house of representatives or senate sections? I don’t recall... Each one to his trade!
Maybe the movies industry is a little out of whack... Maybe some actors, directors, producers, like Sean Penn, for instance, forgot about what they should be doing and, if they want to advocate for something, do it in a movie and let us decide which way to go. It is okay for anyone to have an opinion about anything but, they cannot impose their believes on anybody.

The world is full of mediocrity, and Hollywood, believe it or not, want them or not, is part of the world and the best proof of the fact is "the oscars".
